Preparing For The Interview

Before you begin an interview, there are several things you should remember that will help you to obtain information and assist you in determining if the person is being truthful. Complete Lesson One by following the links in the left hand column in sequential order. At the end of each lesson, there are several tests you can take which will serve as a review of the lesson.

Everyone Wants To Talk

People like to talk. We have all run into that person who never shuts up. Maybe you sat next to one of these people in a plane who talked the entire flight. While some people talk more than others everybody wants to talk. In fact, I will go so far to say that everybody wants to tell you everything you want to know! You may be wondering how that can be since you have interviewed people who stated "I don't want to talk to you."

As human beings it is difficult to want something 100%. For example, even as you are eating your favorite candy bar there may be that small voice in the back of your mind that says,

"This thing isn't good for you."
"This candy bar has a lot of calories in it."

Maybe 75% of you wants to eat it but 25% of you says you shouldn't eat it. As long as 51% is in favor of eating it and 49% not in favor, you are going to eat that candy bar!

The same thing applies to interviewing. By this we mean there is always a part of the person that wants to tell you everything you want to know. There is a part of him that wants to confess and get it off his chest. However, the fear of getting in trouble or getting someone else in trouble may prevent him from telling you certain things. If only 10% of him wants to talk, that may be a tough interview. In these situations, do not become discouraged but focus on that small part of him that wants to talk. Once you start to get a little information from him more information will follow. Soon 20% of him will be willing to talk. Then 30%. Then 40%, etc. But, don't expect 100% of him to talk. Even in a confession a person will not tell you everything that happened.

Consider the following statements which deceptive people often use.

"I have nothing to tell you."
The person is showing little resistance. There is no mentioning of not talking.

"I don’t want to talk."
This person is displaying greater resistance. The key word is "want." He does not want to talk but if you force him to talk he just might.

"I am not talking."
This is the greatest resistance. However, even this person has a small part of him that wants to talk.
